New Triton Participated in the First Sarawak 4...

Kuching, 8 December 2016- Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM), the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia, participated in the first Sarawak 4×4 Jamboree organized by 4×4 Travel and Adventure Club (SAKTA). The event was a four-day exploration drive from Kuching to Serikin.

This year’s event was in collaboration with Pusat Belia Dewan Suarah Negeri Kuching, Sarawak and was endorsed by the Ministry of Sports and Solitary, Sarawak.

MMM sent in four units of Triton (two being the new Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine) into the fray that was driven by members of the media, 4×4 enthusiasts and was led by Malaysia Motorsport Athlete, Leona Chin.  Every participating Triton was outfitted with the compulsory equipment such as winch, protection bars, recovery points, extreme tires, suspension and snorkel.

“MMM was thrilled to participate in the first Sarawak 4×4 Jamboree with 4×4 enthusiasts who gathered to share a common interest for 4×4 vehicles. After Team Mitsubishi Triton successfully completed the recent Borneo Safari event for the second consecutive year, we were very proud and decided to rise up to the challenge once again to participate in another gruesome 4×4 challenge,” said Tomoyuki Shinnishi, Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The event saw the participation of 51 vehicles with only 20 vehicles (including all four Tritons) managed to overcome the set of challenges that the terrain presented.

“The terrain designed for the Sarawak 4×4 jamboree was a hard core one, meant to challenge both the capabilities of man and machine. The Triton came in with very minor modifications, and still managed to overcome all the obstacles. This proves the capabilities of the new MIVEC Turbo Diesel engine and the Triton’s ability to handle any terrain,” said Mr. Jiram Gima, President of SAKTA.

He added, “During one of the obstacles which were a 6-step, steep hill climb obstacle, all four units of Triton showed outstanding performance by climbing up the hill without the need of any winching.”

The expedition was adventurous and arduous, meant to prove the capabilities of the new Mitsubishi Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel engine as a tough and durable vehicle with superb handling and ride comfort.

The overall journey covered a total distance of 187km of mixed on-road and off-road terrain, which proved to be a challenge for vehicles to adjust to the ever-changing road surface.

With Mitsubishi’s long experience in cross country competition and proven success in conquering the toughest terrain, the company is confident of meeting pick up owner’s high level of expectations with continuous improvements.

The newly launched Triton is also the first pick-up truck in its segment to offer an aluminium alloy block diesel engine with MIVEC variable valve timing technology. The new MIVEC engine weights 30kg lighter, which results in improved acceleration and handling.

The previous 2.5-litre cast iron block was already powerful enough to conquer the Borneo Safari last year, so the development of the new MIVEC engine was focused on reducing fuel consumption, which Mitsubishi engineers managed to improve efficiency up to 15 percent.

“The Triton was very stable and comfortable throughout the four-day drive. I was one of the drivers and I noticed that the Triton had very smooth acceleration with sufficient power and torque. I was impressed with how easy it was to drive the Triton considering I am a beginner in the 4×4 adventure!” said Mr. Hii Kheng Juong, Journalist from See Hua Daily.

The convoy flagged-off from Kuching Civic Centre on December 1, where participants travelled for 57km of mix terrains before calling it a night at their first campsite in Mount Moi.

The next day, the journey took participants through a hard core off-road terrain, covering a total distance of 45km from Mount Moi to Padang Pan.

The following day, participants made their way from Padang Pan to Serikin, and preceded their journey back to Kuching covering a total distance of 85km.

After several gruelling 4×4 adventure days, all four Tritons and its drivers came out of the jungle victorious and celebrated the end of their adventure at the Century Hotel for the closing dinner.

The Mitsubishi Triton has once again proven itself through the durability and endurance test with capabilities to conquer any terrain.

More about the New Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine

Powered by a new aluminum alloy block 2.4-litre MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine with VGT Intercooler, the new Triton is now more powerful and more fuel efficient. The new Triton is also the first with diesel engine in the segment to use MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system) variable valve timing technology.

Previously only available on Mitsubishi’s petrol engines, MIVEC allows for finer control of the valves.

Thanks to improvements in common rail diesel technology, diesel fuels can now combust at much lower pressure, leading to reduced noise and emissions. However precise control of the valves is necessary to maintain cold-start performance.

With MIVEC finely controlling the valves, improvements in all areas of performance can now be realised. The lower pressure in the combustion chamber also means that it is possible to use lightweight aluminum alloy material for the engine block.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) has also been improved making the new Triton a quieter and comfortable drive.

The use of timing chain also means reduced maintenance cost, and longer service lifespan.

The new Triton now comes in six variants, allowing it to meet the needs of a wide range of customers.

The new Triton VGT Adventure X variant is the flagship of the Triton range. It comes standard with rugged looking accessories like a Shield Extender for the front bumper, new Sports Bar with Fullbox, and Dual-Tone 17-inch Alloy Wheels.

The existing Triton VGT AT & VGT MT have also been upgraded. On top of the new engine, Automatic Bi-Xenon HID Headlamps with integrated LED Daytime Running Lights and rear fog lamps are now available as standard. The VGT MT model has also been upgraded with a new 6-speed manual transmission.

All 4×4 models  are equipped with Mitsubishi’s signature Easy Select 4WD system that optimizes torque distribution between the front and rear axles. By simply turning the 4WD Selector, drivers can select between 2WD-Hi and 4WD-Hi while driving at speeds of up to 100km/h, or to 4WD-Lo for the most challenging off-road conditions. The Easy Select 4WD system has been continuously improved for over two decades. It is a robust drivetrain that is able to handle high torque levels.

The new Triton retains its predecessors of best-in-class feature of 5.9 meters turning radius.

As before, all new Triton models are imported as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) vehicle from Mitsubishi Motors’ global production hub in Thailand.

Prices and colour options for all six variants are as listed in the table below:

No Variant OTR Price without insurance GST inclusive (RM) in Sarawak Available Colours
1 Triton VGT Adventure X 4×4 AT 126,525.36 Impulse Blue, Titanium Grey

Mitsubishi Triton Survives Borneo Safari Durabilit...

Kota Kinabalu, 17 November 2016- The Borneo Safari, held annually in Sabah over the past 26 years, is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest off-road vehicle event in Malaysia.

team-mitsubishi-triton-for-the-26th-borneo-safari

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) was no stranger to the Borneo Safari, having entered a fifth-generation Triton in last year’s event, which was also the 25th Anniversary edition of the Borneo Safari. That first mission was simple – to prove to sceptics that the Triton, as near stock condition as allowed by the event organisers, would be able to hold its own against the hordes of heavily modified monsters that dominate the starting line-up. The three mandated must-haves comprise a winch, a snorkel, and a set of Extreme Terrain (XT) tyres.

Buoyed by the successful outing, MMM returned in a big way for the 2016 edition, fielding four new Tritons as corporate vehicles, including two units of the recently launched New Triton 2.4 with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine.

The Mitsubishi Tritons was driven by six members of the media, five Triton owners and was led by Malaysia Motorsport Athlete, Leona Chin. All participants and vehicles from Team Mitsubishi Triton earned the respect of the Safari community by making it 400km through the jungle and to the finish line without any change of vehicle parts required throughout the entire journey.

“As the only female driver of Team Mitsubishi Triton, I was extremely proud to be entrusted by Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, to champion the new Triton into the most gruelling off-road and 4×4 adventure! The new Triton managed to complete the Borneo Safari in one piece without any mechanical failure or breakdown. This itself is a testament to the strength, durability and endurance of the Mitsubishi Triton,” said Chin.

malaysia-motorsports-athlete-leona-chin-participating-for-team-mitsubishi-triton-in-the-borneo-safari

To put that achievement in its proper context, many other vehicles, including the highly upgraded ones, suffered from a large variety of mechanical issues and breakdowns, some of which necessitated going out to town to but new parts and returning to the jungle to repair the cars.

“We are very proud of Team Mitsubishi Triton conquering the trails of Borneo Safari for the second consecutive year. We were told that this year’s Borneo Safari was the toughest since 2007 and it’s an achievement for the New Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel engine for being able to overcome this challenge. We dare to say that the Triton can make it, no matter the terrain.” said CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, Tomoyuki Shinnishi.

The terrain and weather conspired to serve up a “perfect storm” of challenges that had everyone raving about 2016 being the toughest, and hence, the best Borneo Safari yet.

Conditions were so arduous that the scout team charged with blazing the trail reported making only 1.7km of progress from the start line in half a day.

the-terrain-conspired-to-serve-up-a-perfect-storm-of-challenges

“There were frightening reports filtered through the radios – cars were overturning, descending slopes so steep and slippery that had to be lowered gingerly by a winch line from the vehicle behind, breakdowns and repairs,” said Albert John Banico, who drove a Triton Adventure into the Safari.

He added, “Though slipping and sliding, the Tritons took on each challenge and overcame each obstacle, one at a time. Co-drivers had to overcome gooey mud that was usually ankle-deep, and at times sucked in legs up to the knee.”

Every participating Triton was outfitted with the compulsory equipment such as winch, protection bars, recovery points, extreme tires, suspension and snorkel.  The tires for the Triton are sponsored by global tire company, Giti tyres.

“As the days passed and time ran short, greater urgency pushed the convoy to keep going, even after sundown. Driving and winching and crossing rickety make-shift log bridges in the dark, with intermittent rain, with no end in sight,” said Arvinda Kumar, who entered as a participating media for Team Mitsubishi Triton.

He added, “There were also vehicles which were stuck on a narrow trail with no space on either side for setting up camp, everyone fell asleep where they sat in the cars as exhaustion overcame the discomfort of sitting upright while still muddy and grimy from the exertions of the previous day. Though the difficulties, this was a great experience and we are proud that the Triton managed to pass through this endurance test.”

though-the-triton-managed-through-with-some-scratches-and-battle-scars-to-show-there-were-no-mechanical-issues

After several gruelling 4×4 adventure days, all nine Tritons came out of the jungle in time for the Borneo Safari closing ceremony. Though the Triton managed through with some scratches and battle scars to show, there were no mechanical issues.

Through it all, the Tritons and its drivers, prevailed in good spirits and the Mitsubishi Triton has once again proven itself to pass through the durability and endurance test.

New Mitsubishi Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engi...

Kota Kinabalu, 25 October 2016- Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is set to make a revolutionary comeback into the Borneo Safari for the second consecutive year, but this time with the New Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine, the first pick-up to offer an aluminium diesel engine! The Borneo Safari will take place from 30 October – 6 November in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The Borneo Safari needs no introduction to the world of adventure, having established a reputation over the past 26 years as one of the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia, the official distributor of Mitsubishi vehicles in Malaysia is joining in the fray by sending four of its Triton 4X4 pick-up trucks, with two of it being the New Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine. Last year, MMM participated with one unit of all-new Triton and have up the ante this year with an additional three units!

the-new-triton-with-mivec-turbo-diesel-engine-will-be-participating-in-the-borneo-safari-2016

“Last year, we were very delighted that the all-new Triton VGT MT (Manual Transmission) had successfully completed the Borneo Safari! The event is known to be the world’s toughest 4X4 expeditions, hence we decided to rise up to the challenge and to conquer the trails of Borneo Safari once again, but with two additional new Triton with MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine VGT AT (Automatic Transmission) and VGT MT (Manual Transmission) variant respectively.” said Chief Executive Officer of MMM, Mr. Tomoyuki Shinnishi.

He added, “By using lightweight aluminum instead of a traditional cast iron material, the new engine is about 30kg lighter than before, while at the same time retaining the same level of reliability and robustness that all Mitsubishi 4x4s are known for.”

The new Triton will participate as a corporate vehicle, championed by Malaysia Motorsport Athlete, Leona Chin. Chin will be driving the new Triton AT variant into the gruelling off-road event.

The Triton will also be piloted by six members of the media who will be behind the wheels of the pick-up truck, accompanied by experience 4×4 instructors. There will also be an additional five Triton owners joining the convoy, bringing the total of Mitsubishi Triton vehicles participating in the Borneo Safari to nine!

“As a Mitsubishi Triton owner, I am excited to take on the Borneo Safari in the new Triton. I have been working with Mitsubishi on several events, and the Triton has proved itself through many tough situations with the new and powerful MIVEC Turbo Diesel Engine. Being a first timer into the Borneo Safari, I am really looking forward to this gruelling event and I am confident that the Triton will be able to conquer the Borneo Safari once again this year!” said Chin.

“The engine performance has also been improved, with output now rising to 181 PS of power and 430 Nm of torque. With reduced kerb weight and increased power output, overall acceleration and driving performance has also been improved,” she added.

The Borneo Safari is an extremely tough event, taking the participants through various terrain challenges over eight days and seven nights. It is a challenge for the vehicles as well as the human participants.

The participating Triton is being outfitted with the compulsory equipment such as winch, protection bars, recovery points, extreme tires, suspension and snorkel.  The tires for the Triton are also sponsored by global tire company, Giti tyres.

Last year, the Triton completed the endurance test in one piece. The Triton was sent into the Borneo Safari almost as standard as how it left the showroom floor. When the “as-stock-as-possible” Triton drove into the parking lot at Kota Kinabalu’s Hakka Hall for the closing dinner, all doubt was removed, as it has done its job.

After the Borneo Safari event last year, the purpose-built Triton has also completed several adventure drives in East Malaysia including the New Year 4×4 Jamboree event in Kuching and Bario, Sarawak as well as Kundasang, and the Tip of Borneo in Sabah with local 4×4 enthusiasts respectively.

The Borneo Safari will flag off at 9.30am from Sabah Tourism Board building at Jalan Gaya, Kota Kinabalu. The convoy will then proceed to Kampung Penampang Baru for the opening Prologue Special Stages.
